About Pithapuram

Pithapuram (also spelled Pitapuram) is an ancient city with over 1,500 years of history in Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh. Historically known as Pishtapura, it served as the capital of the Eastern Chalukyas and later became the center of the Pitapuram Estate.

The town is revered as "Dakshina Kasi" β€” a sacred pilgrimage destination housing the Kukkuteswara Temple, one of the 18 Maha Shakti Pithas. It is also the birthplace of Sripada Sri Vallabha, a 14th-century Hindu saint believed to be an incarnation of Dattatreya.

Pithapuram is famous for its Uppada Jamdani sarees, vibrant fishing communities, and rich royal heritage of the Pitapuram Rajas who patronized education and healthcare.
